Prime Minister to open airport

The $31 million Queenstown Airport upgrade will be officially opened on Thursday September 13 by the Prime Minister the Right Hon Helen Clark, Queenstown Airport Corporation chief executive Steve Sanderson announced today.

“We are delighted that the Prime Minister will attend. The project has been a massive undertaking and the results are outstanding, it’s entirely fitting that the leader of the country be the one to officiate at the opening of one of the country’s leading airports and tourist destination,” Mr Sanderson said.

The upgrade of the airport, which sits at the foot of the Remarkable Mountain Range on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, was largely in response to continued growth.

“This year statistics have shown a major leap in the number of international passengers travelling into Queenstown with passengers and internal flights up by 22 percent. Next year we anticipate in excess of 700,000 passengers,” Mr Sanderson said.

The upgrade has included a major apron redevelopment airside, new arrival hall, significant redevelopment of baggage, check-in, cafe and koru lounge, extensive landscaping, increased parking capacity and a new ring road.

“Not only does the upgrade recognise that Queenstown is a growing national and international destination, it also recognises that the experience begins when you step from the plane. The airport now enhances that experience and more than meets the expectations of those passing through,” Mr Sanderson said.

The project had set a high standard. In the short few months the airport had been completed it had already generated a national and international reputation, QLDC Mayor Clive Geddes said.

“We have received amazing feedback. There is no question the airport is now the source of an enormous sense of community pride,” Mr Geddes said.

It was significant that the Prime Minister would open the airport.

“That will cap off what has been a hugely successful project,” Mr Geddes said.

The public opening would take place at 12.30pm in the airport courtyard.

“This being an airport, we have something rather spectacular lined up to mark the occasion. It will be a memorable opening,” Mr Sanderson said.
