A safer, more efficient airfield
This development programme is all about improving safety, reducing delays, and optimising aircraft movements, which protecting our most critical asset – the main runway.
The first major investment was an engineered materials arresting system (EMAS), successfully delivered on time and on budget in 2025. We were the first airport in Australasia to install this safety feature, which is designed to stop an aircraft overshooting the runway.
Next up will be the construction of a Code C taxiway parallel to the main runway, which will improve operational efficiency and capacity by reducing back-tracking and delays on the ground and in the air. It will also reduce fuel burn and wear on the runway.
Other key projects will see helicopter and fixed-wing operations relocated to separate parts of the airfield. This has significant safety benefits, as well as enabling expansion of the terminal to the south.
A new Airport Emergency Service base and other airfield improvements are in the early stages of planning.
