A complex programme of works to upgrade critical services, increase electrical capacity, and create a better work environment for key airport partners began in May 2025.
The first phase included the construction of a new airfield ground lighting centre and a new main electrical switch room, as well as the installation of a 1.5 MVA transformer and high-voltage cabling. This was completed late in 2025, and is an important investment in the resilience, as well as supporting decarbonisation initiatives.
The second phase of this project is now under way, with contractors building an extension to the terminal, north towards the airfield. This will provide 800m2 of extra space for back-of-house offices and operational space for Air New Zealand and Planebiz. The extension will also include a non-passenger screening room where airport workers, contractors, and visitors will undergo security checks before entering restricted areas.
In total, the project will cost about $12 million.
