Queenstown Airport to compost organic waste on site

02 May 2022

As part of a wider waste minimisation plan, three compost bins have been installed on Queenstown Airport land to deal with food waste from across the airport.

Today marks the beginning of International Compost Awareness Week so we thought it timely to introduce our new airport campus composting initiative.

As part of a wider waste minimisation plan, three CarbonCycle Compost Bins have been installed on Queenstown Airport land to enable all compostable food waste from the airport’s staff kitchens, and the food and beverage outlets in the terminal to be turned into compost. The compost will then be used in the airport’s gardens and donated to the Whakatipu Reforestation Trust.

General Manager Community and Corporate Affairs, Sara Irvine said: “The initiative is just one of the actions we are taking collectively at Queenstown Airport to reduce waste across the airport campus. Organic food matter is known to be one of the biggest producers of landfill gases, so this is a solution that supports our journey to carbon zero. We want to make sure we’ve got the system right and working well starting with compostable waste in the terminal. We are aiming to involve all businesses across the airport campus over time.”

The CarbonCycle Compost system is modular so over time we can add more capacity. The bins are also designed to ensure the pile gets hot to break down material better and have removable side slats so the compost is easy to turn.
