Building a Better Way to Move

If you’ve ever watched planes arriving and departing at Queenstown Airport, you’ll know there’s a lot going on behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly. Our Heavy Taxiway and Runway Upgrade Project is all about improving what happens on the ground – quietly, carefully, and with the future firmly in mind.

So, what’s happening?

We’re building a new heavy taxiway and upgrading the surface of our main runway. These might sound like technical changes, but the benefits are simple: safer operations, smoother aircraft movements which improve operational and fuel efficiencies, and deliver a more resilient airport.

At the moment, some aircraft have to travel back along the runway to take off or leave it after landing. The new heavy taxiway will give aircraft a more direct route between the terminal and the runway. That means less congestion, fewer delays during busy periods, and more efficient use of the airfield and aircraft.

At the same time, we’re renewing the runway surface itself. Like any well‑used road, runways need periodic maintenance. The upgrade will extend the runway’s life and ensure it continues to meet strict safety standards in one of the world’s most iconic flying environments.

What this project isn’t about is just as important.

  • The runway is not getting longer
  • We’re not introducing new aircraft types
  • And this does not change how often or when planes fly

Instead, it’s about looking after critical infrastructure and planning ahead to ensure Queenstown Airport continues to operate safely and reliably for decades to come.

Construction will be carefully staged, and the airport will remain open throughout. Any temporary changes will be well planned and clearly communicated.

This project reflects the work required to operate safely in a live airport environment – combining smart design, long‑term thinking and practical solutions.

From planning to project start

One of the most significant infrastructure projects in Queenstown Airport's history is now underway.

While construction has now started, years of planning, design and preparation have already taken place to ensure the project can be delivered safely and efficiently while keeping the airport operational.
