Electric chargers enable reduction of carbon emissions

16 Jul 2024

New infrastructure enables the electrification of ground service equipment at Queenstown Airport.

Queenstown Airport has installed six common-use charging stations for electric ground service equipment.

These eco-friendly additions enable us to reduce our carbon footprint and support the airlines that operate here to transition away from diesel equipment.

The project honours a commitment made when the airport negotiated a sustainability-linked loan structure with its four banks in 2023.

“We set ambitious targets to hold us to account as we implement our sustainability strategy. One of those targets was the installation of infrastructure that supports reductions in Queenstown Airport's Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, so it's great to have that in place.”

Chief Financial Officer Andrew Williamson

Ground service equipment is used by ground handlers to position, load, and unload aircraft. It includes baggage tugs, pushback tugs, cargo loaders and belt loaders.

The chargers were supplied by aviation industry specialist Freightquip. To enable their installation, and other electrical projects, the capacity of one of the airport's two transformers was increased.
