Queenstown Airport is the gateway to the Southern Lakes region, which is famous for its natural beauty.
One of the best ways to see the area is on foot and there is a walking track to suit everyone, whatever your ability or appetite for challenge. However, choose carefully, as some routes are more difficult than they appear and weather conditions can change quickly. You don't want your next flight to be in a rescue helicopter!

- Check out the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council's website. It is packed with information to help you get ready for an outdoor adventure.
- The Department of Conservation manages some of New Zealand's best walks. It provides a network of more than 950 huts and its staff are always happy to provide advice. It has visitor centres in Queenstown, Wānaka and Te Anau.
- Download the Plan My Walk app. You can use this to tailor your own plan.
- Choose your supplies carefully. Even on a beautiful day, you should carry a raincoat, food and water. Make sure you have enough equipment and emergency rations for the worst-case scenario.
- Check the weather before you go. If bad weather is forecast, consider postponing your trip or changing your plans.
